Creative Ways to Exercise with the Family

If you find yourself with little time to exercise, try daily bouts of 10 minutes. You still get the healthy benefits of being active while having fun exercising. Parents, become a healthy mentor for your kids, find 10 minutes during the day and practice any of these strategies. Be creative and remember… Exercise is fun!

  • Exercise during commercials: Use television commercial breaks to do a few squats, push ups or jumping jacks.
  • The mystery exercise-box: List exercises on individual papers with 5-10 repetitions each.  Place the papers in a box and select exercises to perform one at a time.
  • Jumping rope with penalty: Start jumping rope and every time you stop perform a penalty like 5 push ups, 10 jumping jacks or 10 squats.
  • How many you can do?: Challenge your kids and yourself to do push ups, squats, jumping jacks, and keep track of the record.
  • Dance: Play your favorite songs and dance non-stop like nobody is watching.
  • Sports video games: Use the passion kids have for video games and purchase games that require movement.
  • After school: walk or jog around the block with your kids after school.

Spin-Fit™ Story

While working with kids I realized that the only way to motivate them to exercise was to create something fun. One of the tools that I have used in my “Mini Fitness” program for kids is a flying disc with exercises on paper that I taped on the back of the disc.  If the kids dropped the flying disc, I assigned them an “exercise penalty”. Kids enjoyed it so much that I decided to make it more challenging and mysterious by putting more exercises on a spinning disc, and making the exercise selection random. They loved it, and that was a GO!  Then, I realized that I should make it available for parents and teachers to increase physical activities among their kids. That was a GO-GO! That is how Spin-Fit™ was born.

Spin-Fit™ Promotes Physical Activity

Did you know that nearly one in three children in America is overweight or obese?  Obesity is associated with increased risk of diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure and asthma (www.letsmove.gov). To prevent obesity, The Surgeon General recommends that kids participate in 60 minutes of physical activity most week days (www.surgeongeneral.gov). Organizations serving kids can encourage them to establish lifelong, healthy, physical activity patterns, and guidelines suggest that these organizations provide programs that interest children, including age-appropriate community sports and recreation (www.cdc.gov). Spin-Fit™ can help!!!
